Rocks and Minerals Ahoy!

This Friday was a crazy, but awesome, day for us! John got home from work around 9 a.m. and went to sleep, as usual. But, we got up at 10:30 and started getting ready to go. After much indecision, at 12:30 we decided to grab our chance and head to Price. We had to be back by 4:30 at the latest, so John could get ready and drive to West Jordan for Drill. Spanish Fork Canyon had little traffic as we headed out and we enjoyed looking at all of the sights as we drove, making good time. After finding CEU, we parked the car and walked across part of the campus to the building that the Rock and Mineral Fair was being held in, getting soaked in the big drops of rain that suddenly started falling as we were walking. Our friends from the key/rock place had let us know about the show and after hearing about the kinds of things available at the show we'd been very excited!
We immediately started roaming around the booths, seeing permineralized ammonites and sparkling geodes. There was quite an array of different petrified woods that had been polished up to look awesome. Our key/rock friends had their booth with rock hammers and books and rocks. One older gentleman had set up a giant exhibit of MINERALS. I have been falling in love with minerals for a year or two and I was mesmerized by the amazing selection available. Someone tried to buy a starfish from me, which was funny. The man at the booth laughed and said if all of these minerals were mine, they wouldn't be for sale. I nodded and said my apartment would look really cool. ;)
We also met a cool guy with a mustache that was the one responsible for putting on the show. He had ammolites (ammonites that still have some of the shell on - quite rare) and tons of crystals and rocks. After feeling like we were enduring refined torture, we decided on a few specimens to take home with us. We got an ammolite (of course - like I could leave them all there), some green fluorite from Mexico, pink fluorite, purple and white fluorite, a garnet dodecahedral crystal, a perfect cubic crystal of pyrite still in the matrix (attached to the rock/dirt) from Spain, some sweet reddish aragonite from Spain, a small calcite crystal, and some Brazilian blue agate. :)
We headed out into the canyon just 10 minutes after our goal time and drove in the rainstorms, headed for home. We got home, John changed into his uniform, kissed me goodbye, and left for drill. He's still loving the military and impressing his superiors.
I love the new specimens we acquired this weekend. I think Johnny loves them just as much, though, if not more! I caught him polishing the pyrite with the cloth intended for his glasses. :) He also loves fluorite very much. He's decided it's his favorite mineral. We had a blast. I'm really glad that we went together; it made the hard weekend ahead completely worth it.
